    9hp Briggs recoil/starter
Well, I am hopeful that someone out there might have a suggestion for me. I run a 9 horsepower Briggs and Stratton log splitter that until recently ran very well. The problen is terrible kickback on occasion, enough to just about break a finger! Anyway, the problem became more relevant to the point that the starter assembly needs replacement. With the new assembly just arrived, my question would be is there anything I should check to fix the initial kickback problem before installing the new starter? Too much compression? Pump? Thank you all for your time and suggestions

Yep, the clutch between the flywheel and the pull start is bad.

It either needs to be replaced or taken apart and cleaned. The part is about $15 new and probably in stock at a local dealer.

There are six balls inside, so don't loose them. Inside needs to be squeakly clean with no lubercation. When you install it back, just put some oil on the threads.

No engine model, type or code so I can't provide anything else.

If it's an overhead valve engine, the valves may need adjusting. There's info on this site to a YouTube video as to how to do it.

Usually the clutch problem starts with a LOUD screach every once in while while the engine is on. If that was the case, then it's the clutch. If not, may be the valves.

    Hi,
I agree it could be the clutch, or the flywheel key depending on when the kickback occurs.
    Peace,
