Flame sensors can be electronic or mechanical. Mine is electronic called a Fire Eye. It sees the flame so it allows the gas to continue to flow. Is this a furnace or boiler or what. Brand and model may help. Do you have a pilot light and know where to find it?

Ckeaning the flame sensor on a gas furnace usually consists of taking sand paper or steel wood and cleaning the sensor. Becareful not to touch the ignitor which is close to it since that part is is easily damaged.
