I'm considering installing the 12x12 granite tiles on my kitchen countertop. Can they be installed directly on my exsisting countertop or does it need to be removed? My exsisting countertop is formica laminate I believe. If it does have to be removed, does the entire top come up and then a sub countertop is put down to attach the tiles to? Also my sink is the drop in style, can that same one be used with the tiles or do I have to buy another one, under mount style, similar to what is used when you have the slab granite countertops? I also have a smooth surface stove. Any advise is appreciated.

You can go over the existing counter but it may be best to put a sub counter top down with a layer of cement board over the sub counter.

As for the sink, remove the sink and tile to the edges and then put the sink back into place. When you rehook the plumbing you may need an extension on the drain pipe and longer supply lines if they are not the flexible type.

The cook top unit can be remove also and tile to the edge and then replace the cook top.

If the cook top is gas contact a plumber to remove it if your not comfortable doing it. If it electrical, shut the breaker off and disconnect the wires. Just remember where what screws they hook back up to.
