I am in the process of remolding a second floor bathroom. After watching many TV shows that show the damage a leak can cause in a second floor bathroom I was wondering what I should use to waterproof my bathroom, the orange membrain or the stuff you paint on. If it is the paint, can I paint the floor also. Every thing I have read about the paint is, it is used behind tile, what if I am not using tile. :confused:

Am I correct in getting the idea you want to make the room entirely water proof in case of a leak? Tell us what fixtures you are installing and what wall treatments you want as well as what flooring.

Ballengerb1, I am planning to install a shower, sink and toilet. The wall treatment will most like be beadboard up to a chair rail height then a paint treatment. I have not choice the flooring yet due to the fact I am not sure what type of water proofing I need. The second floor bathroom is partially over the living room, so I am trying to make sure if it should ever leak I hopefully will not suffer too much damage below it... I might also add I am 4th generation in this farm house and plan to have my children raise their children here also, so doing it right is what I really want to do.

The problem with many bath room leaks is that the leak is a pipe or drain below the floor so no water proof surface will stop that. A dripping faucet supply or trap could be caught but then the water must go somewhere or it just starts to fill the room until it reaches the doorway. You can add a sensor on the floor below the sink that sounds off if water is present.
