When you say two switches do you mean two switches side by side or a set of 3-way switches, one by each door?

Two separate wall switches side by side for wiring a fan and light seperatly.

OK, the white wire in the ceiling is the neutral. The black is the hot from one switch. The red is the hot from the other. Cap either the black or the red wire with a wire nut. Connect the white of the fan to the white of the ceiling box. Connect the red of the fan to the remaining hot wire. If you don't like which switch you are using, switch wires in the ceiling box.

Ok so I caped off the red coming out of the ceiling and connected the black to the red fan and white to white. On the wall I located the live black wire and hooked that to the switch and then connected the wite wire coming from that set of wires to the switch. When I flip the switch it blows the breaker.

No. Connect the incoming black hot wire to the switch. Connect the black wire going to the ceiling to the switch. Connect the white wire in the hot cable to the white wire in the cable going to the ceiling. Also cap the red wire going to the ceiling if you are going to do away with the other switch.

I have a Hampton Bay ceing fan that I need to replace the fan switch. It has four wires, three come out of a black capacitor the colors are Brown, Gray and purple. The other wire is black and it comes off the ceiling fan light switch. How do I wire to my replacement switch? They have a L,1,2 & 3 position.
