Basement Flat plumbing regulations and options
    Hi Everyone,

I live in a 1 bed basement flat at the mo with the kitchen and bathroom both on sani-flo as we are below the level of the mains.

We want to convert the flat to 2 bed, 2 bath but now the regulations have changed and we've been told (by friends as opposed to the building regs officer who we haven't spoken to yet) that we can't have everything on a sani-flo anymore and at least one toilet has to be mains in case of a power cut.

We've been told that we can dig a pit at the back of the house in our garden and put in a large pump system that has storage capacity in case of a power cut but these are £2000 plus the labour. This takes the drainage from kitchen and bathrooms without the need for power but then has a pump to get it to the mains.

    My questions are:
    1. Are these the right rules?
    2. Are there any other alternatives?

    Thanks all,

    Emma

    Hi Emma,

You're going to have to contact the building department for your answers. The answers I give for my area might not be the same for yours. Local codes very between citys. Sorry, Tom
