I have a terrible smell in my washing machine, it smells like a dead animal or trash. Checked in and around it. Wash machine is 20 years old.

Fill washer to full capacity with water, once the washer is full of water and just about ready to start wash cycle, shut washer off. Then dump in a gallon of bleach, let it set over night, and then start washer again and let it go through its cycle. Once cycle is done, run it through a couple more cycles on max load. Do this until you no longer smell bleach in the washer. Then, enjoy your fresh smelling washer. Lee.
I agree with MGD but with one slight addition. Fill it, add the bleach, allow it to start agitation for a minute and then shut it down for the night. This gets the bleach water through the pump and hoses too. This is likely a build up of lint and soap scum over the years.
Great catch Bob.
