I have a shower with 2 single handles and the shower head. Probably about 30 years old. The shower head had a slow drip which was annoying. Changed the washer at the end of the stem, repacked the stem. After that the slow drip was slower, but not gone. So removed the seat, and replaced with a new seat. The leak is now a steady stream from the shower head. This is the hot water faucet that is causing the leak. I had to remove my tankless hot water heater to send back for repair, so I turned off the hot water supply to the house.

I am stumped, thinking I might have to replace the entire faucet... is there anything else to try before doing that?

You may have installed the wrong seat. Did it go in smoothly. I say your on the right track with replacing the complete shower valve at this point. At thirty years old, your old shower valve lived a long healthy life,, time to put it to rest. Please let us know what you decide, and if you have any questions about installing a new valve.

You either have the wrong seat, wrong washer. I agree 30 years is a long time but them why go through a lot of trouble and expense when you are getting close to solving this. Take the old seat, new seat and stem with you to a good hardware store and ask them to make you something that matches. Try this,
Remove the stem one more time. Inspect the washer. If in good shape reinstall stem, making sure that the stem is all the way open.
