I got married recently and I wanted my maiden name hyphenate then my marriage name on my license but it wasn't put on right so I can't us it that way ,so I was told the only way to fix it to the way I want it is to get married a second time and then I can correst it and put my name the way I want it . I asked the person that married me and she said it wasn't legal and wouldn't do it . Can you tell me is it legal to get married a second time to correct your name to the way I want to us it .Or do I have to have a Lawyer fix it and about how much would it cost me .

When you marry you have the option of keeping your maiden name, or using the name of your spouse, or having both hyphenated or non hyphenated.. It is not a legal transaction, I mean you don't have to go through the courts to accept your spouse's name. By the same point, you can have your name any way you want hyphenated. Many professional women do not want to lose their identify for business purposes and choose to keep their maiden name such as Mary Smith-Brown.

So, vicky, just do it. You don't have to get married a second time to accomplish your name the way you want it, that is just a very stupid suggestion.

I told Social Security to put my maiden name hyphenate marriage name on my new Social Security Card and I was told no because I don't have it on my marriage license that way , they messed up and only put my marriage name on my marriage license so I was told that is the way my new Card and new ID has to be. So that is my problem .

vicky, all information you could have provided was omitted in your first post. Of course your SS card would be a problem. That is the way it has to be for them, but doesn't mean you can't sign your name the way you want to.

Yes I under stand that I can sign my name the way I want to. But I also wanted it that way on my ID and I can't get it on my ID .I have to speak to a Lawyer now and it mite cost a lot to fix if it can be fixed the way I want.

No you can not get married a second time without getting a divorce, you can do a simple name change at the court house. Or get the drivers license done the way you want it, and use it for the SS office

I wish it was all that easy . I have to show my marriage license to get my new driver license and again they will only give me the name that is on on my marriage license . And a court is not just going to change it because I say so I have to hire a Lawyer to do it..

You can go to the Court clerk's office and ask them for the forms to petition the court for a name change yourself. There's a fee for filing the petition. The Judge can do it or require you to appear.

I will call Court clerk's office and ask about what you said. And I asked a Lawyer about it to that is going to get back to me too. Thank you
