    39 weeks with GBS
My daughter is 39 weeks pregnant and we just found out that she has GBS which is Group B Strep. She is 17 and has been to the hospital twice already in early labor. Her doctor the last time, put her to bed with an IV and she did not dilate at 38 weeks. Wonder why, huh? Anyway, the women in my family have a difficult time dilating. We have contractions but we all have what we laugh and call defective cervical function! LOL But seriously, what do we do? Her b/p is good, but she swells A LOT and gains anywhere from 4-6 lbs a week. She started at around 120 and is now at 190. She doesn't overeat and we keep walking walking walking. What should we do now considering there is a problem with now having GBS? Should she be induced, or have a cesarean, or what? Anyone with answers to ALL of these problems... please reply! Thanks.

Well, there is an antibiotic that is given approximately 12 hours before the impending birth that makes vaginal birth possible. However, many doctors still prefer to do a C-Section with Group B Strep. Has the doc explained to you what GBS is? It is very normal, and there is nothing wrong. However, it will never go away in your daughter. Vaginally in some women it is considered "normal flora." There is nothing to concern yourself with, this is VERY common.

Her doctor will know what is best for her particular situation.

She is just 17 and 39 weeks, many docs consider that full term, but many prefer to wait the entire 40 weeks. Many hospitals will not even induce until the 40 week mark.

First pregnancies can sometimes go on a little longer than the 40 weeks, especially in younger girls due to physical maturity of the female reporductive system.
