I had a doctor appointment yesterday I'm 33 weeks now so I go evey two weeks, and the doctor said that the baby is weighting bigger for her gestation 5 and a half lbs, and that if she weights heavy again on the next appointment we are going to talk about inducing her 14 days early, for her benefit and mine, I'm having her naturally, will this effect that decision? And what does for her benefit mean is something wrong if she is bigger? I'm just a little freaked out, he said don't worry, that we will talk about it at the next appointment if it is necessary, and he said my amnionic fluid is on the very low side of normal and we will check that too, that 10 is as low as is excepted, and I'm at 11 I don't know what this means!

How old are you?
If your frame is small it will be difficult for you to carry a large child.
If your amniotic fluid is low that is also a danger.
What it really means is you have a very caring doctor who is watching out for your best interest and health, as well as your child's.

Im 21 and I have a medium sized build, I'm just a little freaked out about this news because that means I will be induced in 3 weeks, and the low fluid level is there anything they can do?

Oligohydramnios is low amniotic fluid. Is your doctor doing a biophysical profile every 7 days? If not, I would ask him/her about it. It may not be necessary for you, but for me it was.

Inducing 14 days early is no big deal. How much is she weighing exactly? 5 1/2 pounds? If so, that's not big at all.

No, it won't, but I UrGE you to sign the consent for the epidural. Once pain meds are given you can no longer sign the consent and if you decide later that you want the epidural you will be out of luck. Just because you sign the consent doesn't mean you have to have the epidural if you don't want it. It's just an "insurance policy" if you do change your mind.

I am going to the doctor weekly and he said that this check up we will do another ultrasound and check the level again. She weight 5 and a half pounds at 33 weeks and he said she is longer than she show be too and that with the low fluid levels we may be seeing her sooner rather than later. If they had to induce me this early would she be OK? And my husband talked me into signing for the epidural, but I am really really looking not to have to use it.

I doubt the doctor will induce you at 33 weeks, more like 35 weeks is possible. A little over 5 pounds right now is still on the small side. She she may be long, but 5 pounds is still considered low birth weight for a full term gal. Now, she will gain weight, but I doubt it will be a tremendous amount of weight.

It's the oligohydramnios (low amniotic fluid) that the doctor is most likely worried about.

Ask your doctor about contraction stress tests to see how the baby reacts to the contractions. This is to make sure the baby does not get stressed out while you are contracting. As I think I stated before, I had oligohydramnios (I just love that word, LOL) with my daughter who is 15, she was delivered at 34 weeks and there was no problem at all.

I am glad that your husband talked you into signing the epidural consent. Of all the women that I labor at work, only about 15% of them do not get the epidural. We give stadol and phenergan for pain relief, but the first dose is the most effective, after that it doesn't work quite as well.

Was anything suggested to you to attempt to increase the volume, such as increasing your fluid intake? Some doctors and midwives will make this recommendation when levels are on the low end.
At 33 weeks she is a bit larger than the average but keep in mind that to have an average some babies will naturally be smaller and some naturally larger without incident or concern. Also it is important to keep in mind that ultrasounds, particularly those done in the last trimester, are not an exact science. A potential concern with a good sized baby is fitting through the pelvis well.
See what happens with your next scans in regard to fluid level and suspected size. As J_9 said, the bigger concern would be if your amniotic fluids levels dropped... not necessarily the size of baby for birth.
"Big baby syndrome" is one of the more common reasons for the increase in inductions in the last 10 years or so. At this point, your baby is not unusually large and unless you have been told that your pelvis is unusually narrow or misshaped, there is no way to say whether you would have an issue giving birth on your own closer to term. Certainly some of the choices you make during labor and birth can play a role in the ease of birthing a good sized baby.
You are one of the many women who will have to take a wait and see approach, discuss any test results with your doctor, weigh the possible pros and cons of induction or waiting, and make a decision that you are comfortable with.
