My 2yr old daughter has recently started saying she is scared of the monsters. She has come out of her room saying there is a monster and would not go back in on her own. She also got really frightened recently when I came through the front door, before I could turn the corner so she could she it was me, she ran off screaming to her dad. Also, she came to me and said "look mummy monster". When I looked where she was pointing there was nothing there. Is She really seeing something or is it just her imagination?

Well it certainly makes you think doesn't it ? I mean how could a 2 year old know what a monster looks like. At 4 I was afraid of the one under the bed, or the closet to me was a horror show at night. My parents, so I heard later on in life, treated it very lightly and the horrors went away where they belonged.

I suggest you not encourage it, or she will be seeing them forever and actually believe they exist until she gets old enough to realize they didn't and can laugh at the situation. What I mean is don't be scared along with her treat it as 'gee, sweetie, does he have green horns, or purple horns".

First thought is that at some point you or your husband gave some feedback when she saw something that caught her attention or startled her and now she uses it to gain attention. It could have even been something on TV or in a book. Try not reacting or a subdued response like Tickle recommended and see if the "monsters" go away.

Second thought is she may be seeing "something" and translating it into a word she knows or thinks she knows. Stay calm and as her vocabulary gets better let her tell you what she sees. It could turn out to be shadows or patterns in the paint that her eyes are picking out that we automatically over-look.

Third thought is that she is seeing more than most people allow themselves to see. She doesn't have the mental filters in place that most older children and adults use. If so, don't panic or get upset. Children pick up on how to deal with events and situations from how we deal with them. If you stay calm, then she will learn not to be afraid.

A logging company has recently started working behind my house. For the past 2 nights, my daughter has been saying someone is watching her. Like throughout the house. It would seem to me that something was disturbed. She has been fine up until now and has never said anything about a ghost, but she knows what they are because of Halloween. It's not very avoidable... However, she has never been afraid to walk around our house. She has never said anything. Whatever it is, my son is acting strangely, too. He has been sleeping in his own room from the time he was born and I've never had a problem. He started screaming and crying, refusing to be alone in the room. If left alone, he tries to find anyway out that he can. I stood outside the door today to watch and he tried to crawl UNDER the door. I am not saying it's true, but I believe there are some things that some people are more perceptive to than others. I, myself have felt and seen things my whole life. I would not doubt that my children have that ability as well. Just monitor the behavior. Don't cave at bed time if she says she is afraid. See how it goes for a few more weeks.

I am having the same problem. My daughter is going to be 3 in December and she recently started freaking out that there are monsters and we need to lock the door. One night she even wanted her bedroom door lock. She said its black and it tells her no. I don't know if its her imaginatioin or if its something I should be worried about!

I remember when I was small, it was my closet where the monsters came from(it was an old house) I grew out of it because my parents didn't make a big deal about it, not even coming in and looking in the closet. What I mean to say is, this is something you have to expect from children with strong personalities, who even at 3 expect better answers from grownups) It is her imagination, the same way it was mine. Downplay it and there will be problem. There can only be happy things in a 3 year olds life, not dark things.

My Daughter is 2 and we have been dealing with this for the last 2 weeks. They way we have chosen to deal with this is this, I firmly believe that children have the power to see spirits that we as adults have closed our minds to. I don't tell her that they are not real, I simply tell her that they can not hurt her. Because in her mind they are very real. With this being said I have taught my daughter a saying for when she "sees these cookie monsters". She says "You can't scare me! I have Angels that protect me!" Call my crazy but this has worked like a charm.
