Yesterday my daughter got water on the top of her laptop. When she went to turn it on the screen came on and off. Turned the computer off, dried it with a hair dryer, when she went to turn it on she said she heard a sizzle. It is dead or can it be resurrected?

She heard a sizzle and you question is whether it is dead.

Does it turn on? At this point attempting to start it cannot do any more harm.

If it is "dead," you need a service person.

This is what I told her. I said that after she is out of class she needs to go to the campus computer geeks station and see if they can do anything for it. Thank you for your time.

If you spill water on a laptop that does not mean it's dead. One method (I have used) is to not turn the laptop on, just leave it off and give it a few days to let all the liquid evaporate. I do recommend using a blow drying to speed up the process.

I have used this on my cell phone as well twice and it has worked for me. Although it cannot possibly be guaranteed 100%, it is an alternate solution.

The LCD screen and the hard drive will not be happy getting wet.

I just spilled Pepsi allover my keyboard about a month ago. Ordered a new keyboard and replaced it. I then took the old keyboard and gave it a bath. It will probably work.

Electronics when they get wet, its important to disassemble and wash with clear water. You would not have had to do that, but removing the battery and the water would have been a good idea.

Then take the piece of electronics, minus batteries, and put into a zip lock if small or other bag with rice and let it sit for a few days

Some time has past, a week possibly. Not sure what will be the extent or the outcome. Thank you for your advice.

I guess it's time for a service call! I'm a stickler about no one eating/drinking in the same room where I am on the computer (including my laptop) but I am always afraid that some day it's going to happen!

Yes, so am I. She is a college student, not very careful. Can you just picture it, computer on the floor kind of thing, a glass of water near it. Sits in the lazy boy recliner, doesn't realize the glass is even down there and you can guess what happened next! Bullseye!! And she wonders why I don't get her an expensive laptop!!

At least you're very giving when it comes to your laptop. I'm sure it appreciates it. :)

I don't spill things on the stuff that's up on my desk cause even though I eat/drink near it, I manage to keep it away from stuff. However, I did have a keyboard sitting on the floor that some wine spilled on. (No, I wasn't drunk!) Unfortunately anything on the floor is susceptible. So I washed it, scrubbed the keys down with a brush, opened up the back and swashed it all around in the soapy water and rinsed it off. Then laid it all out to dry, turning it often. It's mostly OK. ;)

At least it was interesting to see what it looked like from the inside.

I've also washed calculators and such things. (I'll have to remember the batteries next time.)
