Father wants to give up rights to avoid deliquent child support
My son's father wants to give up his parental rights in order to avoid paying child support both past and present. My son does not want my husaband (his stepfater) to adopt him. If he give up rights will he get out of his financial obligation and do I have any input in the matter? I live in South Carolina if that matters. Thank you in advance.

If no one is adopting the child, then chances are that your son's father CAN'T give up his rights.

Besides, parental rights (having a say in the child's life) and parental responsibilities (paying for the child's needs) are two different things.

Tell him to try. If it were that easy, then there wouldn't be parents sitting in jail for non-payment.

And that pretty much sums it up. He cannot give up his rights unless there is an adoption and YOU decide he can.
