    H1N1 (Swine Flu)
So, have any of you, or anyone you know, experienced the Swine Flu yet?

My children have. We had it two weeks ago and there were 200-300 kids out of our school that week.

Anyone want to share experiences or have any questions?

So far we've been lucky. My 16 year old has been feeling poorly lately, but she doesn't have any respiratory symptoms yet. We're assuming it's back-to-school stress/blues, are there any other early symptoms I need to look out for?

We didn't have any respiratory symptoms other than a slight cough. The main symptom we had was the 102 degree fever and the lethargy.

Locally, since we have had so many cases, our hospital is no longer required to submit numbers of cases to the CDC. The only reports to the CDC are the patients that are suspect to have potential complications (such as people with known respiratory problems like asthma, etc.) or the ones that are already having complications. There were over 200 students out at our local high school the other week.

So far so good, it seems the feeling poorly was a monthly thing. Are all of you better now?

We are all better, it only lasted 3 days before the kids were given the OK to go back to school.

Glad your's was a simple fix other than having to go through it every month.

So am I, although the 16 year old might have a different opinion. She's already asking about the BCP that cuts menstruation to 4 times a year. I'm still using the "you're still growing" line to say no.

Well was about to post a question about getting a flu shot. But I guess I'll just ad to here since I was hoping to get your opinion anyway j_9.

I saw a sign about flu shots today so I asked the pharmacists about getting one. I don't think I've ever had one before, or if I did I was too little to remember. She told me it was recommended for everyone to get both the regular flu shot and then also the swine flu shot that I guess comes out in October? Do you recommend it? I'm nearly 20, pretty healthy, but I am in school and I work right next to the university so I'm in close contact with people living in close quarters. And from what I've heard that's who is most likely to get it (is that even true or just a rumor?) what you described doesn't really sound as bad as the news has been making it sound. And I really don't feel like spending money to be poked if this flu really isn't going to be any worse than any other flu I've gotten in the past.

Killed a teenager in Memphis a week ago.

Yes, I recommend it. Why borrow trouble by not getting the shot and hoping you don't get the flu? You are in one of the target age groups to get this flu.

Do you recommend getting both? Or only H191?

Well as some of you know I have been sick for the past 15 days nonstop. Except the last few days it has only been strep throat. I had every symptom of the swine flu but never went to the doctoe to get checked for it. I could have had it and the virus might still be in me. I don't know but I have never been this sick before.

So here's my next question. The pharmacist that I talked to said the H191 shot wouldn't be available until late October. But let's say I get sick with it, or what at least appears to be it, before then. Should I go to the dr right away? Since it's actually been killing people my age? Or wait like a normal flu and go if it's something like I can't keep even fluids down after an entire day?

Justcurious - if you would like another view of this vaccination thing just read the ebook in my signature and decide for yourself if you want to partake in this swine flu panic or not.

I know I'm not going to partake of any vaccination this year or any other year. The one year I did get a flu shot I was sicker than a dog and other years when I didn't get a flu shot I did get sick, but not like the year I did get a flu shot.

Twinkie... the date of that ebook is 1977. There have been dramatic changes since then.

Also, you are not one that needs the vaccine unless you have some serious underlying medical conditions.

It is preferred for children and young adults under 25 as well as pregnant women to name a few.

Why don't we try for something more up-to-date and accurate such as the CDCP. You know Centers for DiSEASE CoNTROL & PReVENTION

I asked my Doctor - he said get both. Got the flu shot earlier this week, he'll call when/if the swine flu vaccine comes in.

A neighbor of mine was sick for several days, left with hacking cough. Doctor says, yes, it's the swine flu.

    So it's out there!

In my community the health department has requested that if you think you have H1N1 do not go to the hospital.
What is the recommended mode of treatment then? Thanks!

My kids had the swine flu. A local teen died of it two weeks ago. 3 nurses on our med/surg floor have been out with it for almost 2 weeks now.

But remember... it's JUST a flu!

Artsy... We (our facility, because we have had so many patients with it) aren't even to report to the CDC anymore unless the patient has underlying medical conditions that could cause serious problems, such as asthma, COPD, pregnancy, etc.

Treatment? How I treated my children... just like the flu. Tylenol, then motrin 2 hours later, tylenol 2 hours after the motrin. You treat is just like you treat any other flu. Fever is important to a degree. While bacteria can live in high temperatures, viruses can't. So this is one time that fever, to a certain degree, is a good thing. Lots of rest, lots of fluids.

Last week I just received my certification on the H1N1 virus, because my patients are at highest risk.

We had another H1N1 death in Memphis this week. It was a 13 year old. As you can see, it's the young that are the most susceptible as they have not been exposed to the flu that went around in the 70s.

This totals 2 teen deaths so far. Children go to school, and are exposed to a variety of illnesses, this being one. As soon as the vaccine comes out, my children will be getting it. I don't want to lose them.
