I am replacing a shower spout in a shower ~30years old. The copper pipe protruding through the wall has a brass fitting which appears to be permanently attached to the copper pipe. I do not see any solder or thread between the two pieces. The brass piece has a few threads near the wall and the other end has an o-ring. I purchased a universal spout with various front and rear end mounts but none seem to work. The rear end fitting adapter is too narrow to slide over the entire brass fitting. The original spout has a thick plastic insert threaded near the wall and has a solid (non-thread) section near the mouth of the spout for the o-ring to seal. Any ideas on this type of fitting and where I might get a new spout that will fit? Maybe a new o-ring too. Thanks,

Most of the nipples protruding from the wall are 1/2" copper tubing, the spouts are normally 1/2" threaded or slip fit depends on which one you got see the Images below, you say that the copper pipe (nipple) is threaded to the fitting inside the wall and free end has an O ring, it sounds like you have a slip fit spout and the O ring from the old spout, bring the old one with you to Home depot or Lowe’s find best replacement. A universal fit will work best!

For the slip fit use a little silicone GREASE to lubricate the new Oring just prior to installation so the new Oring doesn't bind and break.

For threaded one you will need some Teflon tape, good Luck.

Thanks for the great illustrations. As it turns out, I went to a local plumbing supply warehouse. My spout is a Delta product. I was able to purchase a direct replacement and back out (from the new spout) the brass insert containing the short thread and brass section with o-ring. I left the original brass insert on my plumbing and just swapped the o-ring. The new spout works great. Thanks again for the reply.

I have the same situation... I Can't buy a replacement anywhere... threads are 1 1/4 in size. Largest "universal" (HA) is 3/4... where did you find yours? Any suggestions? Thank you!!

I had the Delta spout adapter as well and this was the closest thing I could find on Google, so I'm adding this post in hopes it helps others.

I was trying to install a Plumb Works Universal Fit Tub Diverter Spout from Menards and things just weren't going to work as long as I had the Delta adapter on there. It was sweated on and I had to use a propane torch to unsweat it. I found a YouTube vid that really helped me learn this (outdoor hose spigot). My first time using a propane torch so I was a little spooked and I wouldn't suggest it for the faint of heart.

When I got it off, the copper stuck out of the wall almost 1", so none of the adapters in the Plumb Works kit would work. I figured all I had to do was extend the existing copper another 3" and then I could use the spout without any adapters (the 4th option in their installation instructions).

I went to Lowe's and got a 1/2" FIP coupling (connects two 1/2" pipes together) along with a 1/2 by 2-1/2" extension that had threads on both ends ($11.49 total) Some good Teflon tape on all threads, screw them all together and it worked great. I'll try and attach pics if I can.

That tub spout adapter wasn't soldered on... it was just screwed tightly to the pipe. Here, when you heated the adapter it caused the brass adapter to expand and that just made it easier to remove the adapter (adapter CAN be soldered on, but it wasn't in this case)... ;)

Further, that pipe sticking out of the wall looks like it is a black steel nipple, not copper tubing (copper tubing isn't threaded). Perhaps it could be a brass nipple, but from that picture it sure looks like a black nipple and it should be removed IF you find that you get a periodic "rusty" burst of water when you first turn water onto the tub. If no rust issue, then I suppose it can stay for now, but it still isn't right... just FYI!

Finally, for future readers of this thread:

If you purchase a delta replacement spout (found at most plumbing supply stores) you can simply unscrew the old spout off, use the old adapter (swap over the ORING from new to old) and then add a little silicone grease to the ORING and screw the new spout on...really should be that simple in most cases!

Thank you for the info -- I'm pretty sure you are right about the black steel, although I've never noticed any rust (wasn't looking). I did try pretty hard to unscrew the adapter. You can see the teeth marks from the channel-lock pliers on the adapter. I didn't want to break the pipe off behind the wall, so... heat.

I did try finding a replacement spout for this Delta, but I'm pretty sure it was discontinued (I was replacing a very old spout). That said, I was looking for a brushed bronze spout and all they had at the big-boxes was chrome varieties so that limited my options.

The spout I was replacing was exactly like this one: https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/plumbi...on-200364.html. I'm sure it was popular... in the 60's or 70's ;)

I plan on renovating the whole bathroom a year or so down the road, so I'll be sure they replace the black steel with copper when the time comes. Thanks again for the tip!

These type of spouts are called Delta pull down diverter spouts and are still sold at all major plumbing supply stores and online:

However, as you said, brushed bronze may not be readily available and if available is probably only available as a "special order" through a plumbing supply wholesaler or directly from www.deltafaucet.com
