How do I potty train my 9 month old cat?
My 9 month old cat potty's on everything! He knows how to use a litter box but I want him to go outside so I don't have a stinky litter box. So I put him outside after he eats and when I let him in he pottys on something. And I know he goes outside because lately he has been outside most of the day, but it just seems like he likes going in the house and I don't want to make him an outdoor cat. But I can't seem to teach him how to go utside and I've tried putting the litter box outside and showing him that's where he needs to go is out there and then the dogs make a mess of the litter box so I've gotten rid of that thing. Please help me of you have any suggestions!

I think your best bet is just to clean the litter box often, and maybe get a hooded one with an air filter (the one I have is a called a "Booda Dome"). We don't smell ours at all - and neither do my friends when they come over. We clean out nightly and replace the filter every couple of months. I'd never let my cat outside - even just to go potty. She was a stray, and barely survived outside. I'd hate for anything to happen to her just because I didn't want my house to smell... Hope this helps.

    Use the litter box...
Your cat's behavior is telling you that he doesn't want to be put outside!!

Cats naturally use the litter box. It's a life skill they learn from their mothers as kittens. With a litter box, the cat can go to the bathroom when it needs to, in private, and can burry the evidence following natural instincts.

Even if you taught the cat that it was okay to use some part of your back yard as the litter box, I don't think you could control when it needs to go. If the cat needs to go, and can't get outside or get to a litter box, your going to find more of those little gifts and stains around the house, and that will really smell bad.

Can you put the litter box in your basement? That way the cat has the litter box and you don't have to smell it. One cat won't produce too much waste, so it would be minimal effort on your part to scoop it every night or two.
