Hi,
A solenoid will have two large posts and one or two small posts. The battery will connect to one large post and the starter to the other. If there is a smaller wire (usually red) connected to the battery's post, it needs to return to that post also since it energizes the harness. There is a wire conncting to the small post (often red, but not always) and there could be a second small post with probably a black wire to ground the solenoid (most ground internally.)
If I was not clear; I will try again. I write like a technician because I have been one for over 35 yrs.
