My furance is about 25 years old and the gas pilot light is out. How do I relight the pilot light? Can some one please help me on this. I would like to get some heat into my house. It is a climatrol furance

Usually they have a 3 position valve, off, pilot, and on. Locate the pilot itself. If you have to, follow the 2 smaller tubes from the gas valve. Turn the valve to pilot and push it in. Hold it in and hold a flame next to the pilot. The long reach lighters work great. Once it lights, hold the button in for a couple of minutes. If the pilot keep going out when you let go, the thermocouple is bad. It is the smaller tube that ends in a cylinder in the pilot flame. Usually there is a screw holding it there, and a nut back at the gas valve. Go buy a new one. They are all the same except the length. If you can't find just the right size, buy a longer one. Curl up the excess without kinking the tube. Instal it and try again.

Per your PM. You do not need to shut the gas off to change the thermocouple. It is actually an electrical connection although it looks like a compression tubing nut.

Best to keep things out on the board where somebody like Northern heat can catch my mistakes. I know enough to help in many cases, but am not infalable.

I haven't seen any real mistakes on your part Labman. I do stay on the side of caution and ask people to disconnect the power anytime they are playing in their furnace, an old frayed wire could knock them on there buttocks. And anytime they are messing with the gas valve turn of the gas valve (AKA... A-valve) and check for gas leaks when you turn the a-valve back on.

Good point on shutting the gas off. If you are working on the thermocouple, the pilot is already off.
