    Simplicity 4208 steering box
Am having trouble getting to the steering box on a Simplicity 4208 riding mower (poss 83 model). Can get the gas tank loose, but not off. Does the steering wheel come off by taking off the nut under the steering cap? I took same off but the steering wheel didn't act like it wanted to come off... Two (2) of the bolts on the under side have come out leading to excessive play in the steering. I can not get new bolts to catch onto anything and can't get to the inside (under the tank) to see what I have to do to fix same.. thanks

    Hi,
Can you find the model number? I think you unlatch the seat deck and swing toward the rear and it is inside the frame.
    Peace,

I swung the seat back toward the rear, but the area I need to access is under the gas tank. I can get that area loose from the visible nuts and bolts, but can't get it out of the way because of the steering wheel. I took the nut off the bolt under the center steering wheel cap, but the steering wheel didn't act like it wanted to lift, and I didn't want to make matters worse by pulling too hard.. thanks though... tmr

    Hi,
I had you looking for the tag with the model and serial number; Simplicity has a large number of manuals available online. I remember the 4208 and worked for a Simplicity dealer lo those 25 years ago; but was looking for a "memory-jogger" to assist in my answer. The tag could be on the frame near the rear tires also.
    Peace,

crigby, I finally got enough nerve to take a hammer to the steering wheel and sure enough it came up. We raised the gas take assembly enough to put in 2 replacement bolts on the steering box plate and I am ready to go. Thanks for assistance.. tmr
