Three days ago I found a dachshund at the bottom of my drive way.I asked the neighbours and no one knew where he came from so I was going to keep him.About two hour later he started throwing up and having diarrhea so I took him to the pet ER.It turns out he has parvo and if we kept him in the er it would be almost $1000 and they were not sure if he would make it even with treatment.I don't have $1000 saved up to pay for it.Is there something I can do at home to help him?I have been giving him pedialyte and he seems to be a lot more active and its three days later.Is he getting better or is this just a part of parvo?

If your vet does not treat him for the parvo he will die

There is nothing you can do at home to treat parvo. Little dogs have a harder time with it than do larger dogs.

My RottLab had it a few years back, she is healthy and playful now... but it did set us back about $1,500.

If I had the money I would keep him in the vet.But they want half up front and the other half when I pick him up.And I just don't have the money or anyone I could borrow it from.I don't know what to do other then try and help him at home.Im not sure what I should do.

I'm so sorry that this is happening.

Sadly, if it is parvo, the vet is your only option. There is absolutely no home treatment for this disease. None. Even with treatment the fatality rate is high.

What tests did the vet do to determine that it was parvo?

It was a fecal Test

After reading the above site... fecal test is not accurate and since you do not know the vaccine history of the pup you willneed to get a blood test to confirm. Also wqs the pup scanned for a micro chip?

Have you tried calling any local shelters to see if they can treat the puppy or at least treat him at a discounted rate?

It's a horrible situation to be in, I hope you can find a way to get the little pup some relief one way or another.

You could also try putting up fliers for "Found dog". Someone may be looking for this pup that can afford the treatment.

You could try and work a payment plan for the vet. I've also heard of vets sending parvo patients home with I.v. fluids to give themselves to cut down on the treatment costs.

If there is absolutely no way that you can get any vet care then all you can do is continue with the pedialyte and make him as comfortable as possible. Dehydration is a large part of why parvo puppies die but there can be fatal or permanent internal damage as well that may effect the span or quality of life this dog has even if he does recover.
