Star lock washer bolt and nut scenario
On the lock washer, does the protruding part go facing
The nut, so it does not spin off. Or does it go facing the bolt

You've been asking the weirdest questions lately.

It really doesn't matter for fastening purposes. It does matter for other purposes.

The standard split washer could damage aluminum heads, for instance. In that case its, bolt, flat washer, split washer and possibly another flat washer.

In general, you'll find a flat washer, split washer and nut on the threaded portion.

The flat puts the force over a larger area, the slit provides the lock and the nut provides yet another lock. No parts get damaged in the process.

On a mower blade, you;ll find a large washer to equalize the area and a lock washer.

Remember the lockwasher can damage parts f too soft and a flat washer spreads the force out.

Generally, you want to COMPRESS the lockwasher without moving it or damaging the underlying surfaces. So you'l find

Bolt, washer and lockwasher. You turn the bold against the lockwasher, the lockwasher doesn't turn and all is happy.

WHat are you trying to fasten?

    Hi Oneill

Does not matter which way u put split lock washer on, the split will always be going in same direction.

    Did not read title.

On star washers the tabs alternate the side they are bent to. So it does not matter which way they go on either.
