Same as all animals they do stop producing sperm eventually and become sterile.
It depends on the individual animal though.
I know this example is a dog but it's the same principle...
My mum had a Great Dane that was sterile by the time he was 6 years old, she wanted to breed him but had a sperm count done and there was nothing.
Now she has a Miniature Poolde who's father was 17 when he produced him!
Quite an age difference there.
With Toms it's better to get them neutered as early as possible to avoid bad behavior and to stop them wandering.
Even if you have an older cat it still pays to get them neutered so they don't end up producing little baby strays with "Fifi" down the road.
