 me and my boyfriend have been trying for a year for a baby but have been unsuccessful as I haven't had a period for this long either. Gp says its normal and will take time. Can't help thinking there's something wrong though.

It's true, it does take time. There are many things that need to be timed correctly for pregnancy to occur.
If you are worried though, try seeing a fertility specialist.
How old are you? This could affect fertility too.
If you are not ovulating you cannot conceive, you need to visit your obgyn to find out why you have not had a period in a year!
DanielNoahsMommy is 100% correct. (Sorry, DNM, I've got to spread the rep)
You could possibly ovulate at any time, but since you're not getting a period regularly you won't be able to predict when. Did you tell your GP about this? See if you can find the book, Taking Charge of Your Fertility - you'll learn about cycles - it's a real eye opener.
Note: My cousin hadn't had a period in 3 years and she was 5 months along before she realized she was pregnant! Turns out she had ovulated - got pregnant - and never knew because she was used to not getting her period.
