Can anyone please identify this plant? I have no idea how it got into my garden but at over 5ft tall it is taking over...

Think we have a couple, if it is, this plant is said to keep away Mosquitoes?
Look Through here, I believe they have a picture for every plant in Florida:

I've seen it around here (ohio), but I have no idea what it's called. I can't find any pictures of it online yet, but I'll keep looking.

Edit: I think it's an amaranth plant. If I'm right, then it's edible. I would take a picture, or even part of a plant to a local botanist or garden center just to make sure, if you decide to eat it.

Hi! jingo1, and welcome to AMHD :)

One must keep an open mind when it pertains to nature, and this spaceship we call Earth.

Your Purple Amaranth, Red Amaranth, Prince's Feather, Mexican Grain Amaranth
Amaranthus cruentusis is listed as being in GB as far back as the early to mid 1800's
    Lindley Library

Here are a few listings from THE ROYAL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

    Hi! hheath541

Sage advice to have the plant properly identified, if it is to be consumed.

You are correct in your assumption that this plant is edible. Whether it is palatable is up to the consumer.

amaranth plant. if I'm right, then it's edible

There are too many plants, and even other things, that look like something edible and are actually harmful to consume. I always make sure that I know for SURE what something is and that it IS edible before consuming it.

    Your welcome

Isn't amazing though, the faith we put in the grocer's when we go shopping.

    Just Dahlia
My crazy neighbor has those and seemed to pop up over night. Unfortunately she planted them all about 5 feet apart and it just lookes like a bunch of weeds towering over her white picket fence.

She should have grouped them better, and next year she is going to have a big problem with spreading.

Can one of the above posters please provide a direct link, not a link to 100's of unknowns, with a picture? Thanks.
