Which is the hot white or black.installing a disconnect box on a heat pump.Which is which??

All right, I have to say, if you are asking this it is safe to say you might be in a little over your head doing this job.

There is a very real chance that BOTH the white AND black are hots.
Do you have a meter or tester, and by this I do not mean a neon tester.
