Hi, my skin tone is medium dark brown, I was wondering does meladerm make your skin lighter and is their any type of bleaching/lightening cream for the body because I've tried so much creams for my underarms, inner thighs, knees and elbows and nothing seems to work, and I heard that meladerm works, please can anyone let me know??

According to several sites including the official one, Meladerm contains two major active ingredients: Alpha-Arbutin, and Kojic Acid.

(Alpha) Arbutin works by inhibiting the tyrosinase process. Kojic Acid works in a similar way just as Arbutin does. Because the two ingredients are proven skin lighteners, I'd say the Meladerm has a good chance of working for you, especially because you have medium to dark brown skin.

However, I'd personally recommend you use your own, single based skin lightener. Based upon my research and personal use, Arbutin and Kojic acid together make little sense, and I honestly don't see how they could compliment each other too well. Whether they will interfere with each other while treating your skin is uncertain, but chances are it won't have as much potential as if you were to use Arbutin or Kojic acid alone.

My advice? Go for it if you must. I'd recommend using an Alpha Arbutin powder mixed with a cream base or plain Kojic Acid for maximum/proven skin lightening.

Many people say Meladerm was unable to lighten their skin or it lightened very little and does not work well on darker skin tones. That's why I chose not to buy it because it is not potent enough.

Personally, I've never used Meladerm, so it's possible that it uses much lower concentrations both Kojic acid and Alpha Arbutin. In that case, it'd be more effective on lighter skin (olive to golden bronze) than darker skin.

That's what I believe too, because Meladerm has so many good active ingredients listed but their product is not so effective. So the only answer is that they must use very little amounts of the active ingredients, but just enough to put it on their label and charge people more for it. And that they dilute their actives until their product is unable to do anything.

Hydroquinone has been proven (scientifically) to work on skin shades up to dark brown. However, it's been noted that Hydroquinone is VERY unstable for most people, and the side-effects are hazardous, especially for long term usage. (Leading to the ban of Hydroquinone products in places such as the UK.)

Darker skinned people have often exhibited forms of skin disease and cancer from long term use, while lighter skinned people have often become darker from the use of Hydroquinone. It typically fails to achieve desired results for most people.

In conclusion? I wouldn't use it above the normal 2%, which is pretty useless for major or drastic skin lightening. It's used in minor melasma treatments without too many side effects, and that's about it.

That is true that Hq is very unstable and should be temporary no more than a few months at most. But, if nothing else work for me that may be my last option. But the other day I read that it can harm the kidneys and other organs of the body if using too much for too long. But, what else can compete with the lightening effect of Hq?

Hydroquinone - Works by decreasing the production and increasing the breakdown of melanosomes (melanin pigment granules) in the skin's pigment cells (melanocytes). Also inhibits Tyrosinase.

Alpha Arbutin - An ether or Hydroquine; this also inhibits the Tyrosinase process. None to extremely (some might say never proven) little evidence proving it's link to the carcinogenic effects of Hydroquinone.

Kojic acid - A natural tyrosinase inhibitor.

Monobenzone - Increases melanin excretion from melanocytes. Proven to harm melanocytes, especially in larger concentrations. Typically lightens skin in lower concentrations, depigments in higher. (Proven)

Glutathione - (Must be naturally risen) A powerful amino acid/antioxidant. Has shown abilities to lower the need for melanin, therefore your body produces less of it overtime. More research necessary to prove it's effectiveness on all humans in general.

There are many other Tyrosinase-active skin lighteners, many that are natural yet less active. (E.g. licorice root, etc.) These, are the main and more effective ones.

If you're looking for a natural lightener I used nur76 and it worked but I swear I'm the only person who says it worked for them :S
It's just bare expensive and also I'm not sure if my results where also because it was winter time whilst using it!

Wow, you're the first I have heard to say that Nur76 actually worked for them. How long did you use it for? Winter can lighten the skin a bit compared to the summer's heat, so maybe that also had something to do with it as well.

This si true, I used it for 2 months and maybe a bit longer but it makes your skin really clear and smooth, I would say it definitely removes blemishes and prevents acne

Jeny_84 have you decided if your going to use the meladerm or something else?

Have to agree with you. Never worked for me.

Maharani, can you tellme what the ingredients are in Nur76, how long did you use it for? 9.8 times out of 10 I hear that it does not work, and yet it is so expensive.

Hi, I've red all the comments and I'm geussing meladerm doesn't work well for medium to dark brown asain skin? As I am thinking of buying but do you know any other lightening creams that are less harmful and more active ?
