Hipaa Violation Using Med Records to get Phone # for date!
The person at the front desk used my medical records to get my personal number then texted me about 8 times asking if I was single and such. I kept asking whowas this and finally they admitted who they were and where they worked. Is this a hipaa violation? If so, what do I do next?

They didn't disclose your medical information to a third party so I don't think it was a HIPAA violation.
I would talk to their supervisor to get to the bottom of this though.

Not a HIPAA violation but definitely unethical.

You can go one of two ways - either a)refuse their advances and hope it stops there or b)report them to their supervisor.

Actually HIPPA regulations clearly state that persons not involved with your care DIRECTLY are not to even handle your records. Unclear exactly what this person's role is in your care, but if it was a matter of simply looking at your chart to get the number, that violates HIPPA. If not, it is most assuredly unethical. I'd report it directly to the employer, not a single person, and not verbally--write a formal letter of complaint and copy it to at least one other person in the organization ,including the offending snoop. You may also consider at least filing a report for harassment should anything more come from it--that way your complaint, and the effort to seek help, would be well documented. Good luck--that's really low.
