My husband and I own a house and about a year ago we let a friend rent a room. He never paid his share and still owes us money. He left a month ago to visit his family out of state & we haven't heard from him in over a month. When he left it was under the impression that he was coming back (there was no specific date). However, my husband & I have tried numerous times to contact him with no success. There was no indication that he would be gone this long. He left numerous personal belongings clothes, etc... along with his car in our garage that does not currently run. How long should we hang on to his stuff? What do we do with his car?

You can't do anything with his car because the title is in his name.

You could put his belongings in the car possibly. Not sure how legal that is at this point though.

What state is this?

I'm in Arizona. The car is registered in NY. Someone told me that I could possibly file for an abandoned vehicle title after some time. Is that true?

Also, the car does not ru so it's in my garage. I would like my garage back.

I think abandonment means it would have to have been left on the street.

With the car I still think you need to check with the DMV for legally getting rid of it.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that there was no lease agreement. There wasn't even a verbal agreement really, just regarding how much money he would give us each month. It has been close to 30 days since rent was due. Thank you for the advice. I appreciate it!
