Whatais the cause and remedy for a Maytag clothes washer that starts smoking from the rear and sends smoke into the drum?

Whatever it is I would be too worried about an electrical problem that could end up catching fire.
Get it checked and fixed or get a new one--
Quit using it before you do end up with a fire.
