Sistering is frequently done for joists or rafters, doubling up pretty much explians it. Scabbing is like double sistering with ply or lumber on both sides of your beam.

In construction could also be a moonlighter taking work away form the day guys. We joke and call them Scabbs. ( I been guilty of that starting in the buiss.. )

We use sistering for doubling one side on a rafter and I addd "brother" to that at times letting my guys know equally the same material on both sides.

"Scabbing" here is not considered a structural application. For instance adding a coupe of scabbs to the top plates in interior walls for nailer's for drywalling. Or just say check for nailer's missing.
