    Replacing White-Rodgers Thermostat with Honeywell Digital
    I am replacing a 13 yr. old White-Rodgers Mechanical thermostat (couldn't find model # on website) with a Honeywell 5-1-1 Digital thermostat.

    The wiring was as follows for White-Rodgers:

    Green = G
    Yellow = Y
    White = W
    Red = RH jumpered to RC

    The Honeywell has terminals for
    Green = G
    Yellow = Y
    White = W
    RC
    R

    I have G, Y, W connected in their corresponding terminals, but there is only a terminal for RC and a terminal for R, so I have no idea if I should just insert the RC portion of the red wire (in the center of the wire) and tape the RH portion of the wire (at the tip of the red wire). Or, should I insert the RH into the R terminal?

    I have unfortunately chosen to do this on a blustery day.

    I found the installation manual buried in a bag. I ended up putting the RC portion of the red wire into the RC terminal (had to crimp it a little) and then placed the RH tip into the R terminal.

    The A/C and Heat both work, so I'll assume this was correct.

    Did the directions for the Honeywell identify the R terminal? MY guess is that it powers the thermostat plus is switched to the white for heat the same as the RH in the WR thermostat. If so, jumper the RC and R and connect to the red wire.

    Since this is all proverbial Greek to me, I think my eyes crossed at your response and I have no idea how to answer correctly. :) The Honeywell directions did not indicate which color wire or which terminal corresponded to a particular function. I may not have understood it anyway, but I think maybe this is what your question back to me is related to?

    I essential only had one red wire, in which the covering was stripped off in the middle of the wire. That exposed portion in the middle was wrapped around the RC terminal on the Smith-Rodgers thermostat. The remaining portion of the wire (the tip) was wrapped around the RH terminal of the Smith-Rodgers thermostat.

    Since the Honeywell thermostat only had a terminal for RC and a terminal for R, I was befuddled. The directions generally indicated that RH could go in the R (if I read it accurately). So far so good, but I am hoping to avoid some of the disasters that appear to have occurred for some folks on this listserv.
