What is the statute of limitations for collecting a debt. Home Shopping Network says that I owe money. For over a year they have not been able to tell me what this money is for. Several people have gone over my account and state that there is nothing there that would require a block on my account. I honestly know of nothing that I could owe them for. They now tell me that they are going to review their archives. I'm wondering if there is a statute of limitations on collecting a debt.

A statute of limitations would refer to how long they can sue you in court over this alleged debt. But they can continue to try to collect indefinitely. If you truly believe that you don't owe this debt then your first step should be to write a letter to HSN or whoever is trying to collect from you and emphatically state that this debt doesn't exist, you never contracted for such goods or services resulting in this debt, that any services being received as a result of said "debt" should be immediately discontinued and ask for proof or verification of the debt. Depending on their response you may need to take additional action but this would be a logical first step.

Thank you for answering my question. I have already done the above. I've been trying for over a year to get verification of the debt and they have not provided me with it. In the past two weeks alone there have been about 10 e-mails back and forth. I'm told that they see nothing in the account that warrants a block and it will take 5 business days to check. I am now on my third set of 5 business days. What would be my next step? Thank you
