Motor sound when water is running
Just recently I have begun hearing a motor type sound in my house every time the water is running (washing machine filling, toilet flushing, dishwasher running, etc... ). It seems to be coming from behind the wall in my basement near where the water line actually comes into the house. I have been in the house for 5 years and it just started less than a week ago. Any ideas on what the noise is coming from and is it a sign of a bigger problem?

Also, do you have a water softener near incoming water? Please anwer all questions above and we will take it one step at a time. Is water meter located inside the house, or outside the house(if on city water). Lee.

Thanks to all for the quick response...

    I am on city water.
    Meter is outside the house.
Do not have a water softner (that I am aware of).
    There is a PRV.
The shut off is completely open

Does the noise seem to be louder at the prv, or outside at the meter?

The noise sounds as if it is coming from behind the wall (the basement is finished) where the access to the shut-off and PRV happens to be. I can feel the vibration in the PRV.

I can feel the vibration in the PRV.
Then you have located your source, Replace the PRV. Good luck, Tom
