I am trying to replace carpet with new hardwood floor on my second floor of single family house. I found a nice wood that I like in Lumber Liquidators. It's a 5/16" Brazilian Golden Teak wood which is very strong and looks great. This is in the affordable range($3-4/sq.ft) and so I ordered the wood. Now I am beginning to think if it is ok to install 5/16" on the second floor of a house over plywood surface? Will there be any issues or should we just go with 3/4" inch of a lower affordable quality? I plan to stapple them at 8" a part as per their recommendation. Please advise ASAP.

What is thickness of plywood subfloor? Should be at least 3/4''.

If not, install 1/2'' plywood over existing. This will give u enough body to reduce deflection of floor between floor beams.

Use rosin paper between the 2 layers of plywood. This will reduce floor squeeks.

If the existing sub floor did not present issues with carpet the new floor won't either. Like creahands says you need to install rosin paper. Most of those floors can also be glued down and stapled.
