    Firefox and Shortcut Icons
    Hello,

I just switched from IE7 to Firefox, due to extremely slow web browsing. Tried everything first to speed up IE7. Firefox is lightning fast compared to IE7, so that problem solved.

In setting up Firefox, I am having the same problem I had several months ago with IE7. It's a weird one, so bear with me please.

I created a folder on my desktop with all my monthly PC maintenance applications and web shortcuts, to make it easier for me to do my PC maintenance... all in one place.

With IE7 I noticed that only the shortcuts to web pages, not applications, lost their Favicons or Icons assigned by me. If I moved the shortcut out of the folder, onto the desktop, the icon came right back.

After months of research, I learned that it depends on how you create the shortcut as to whether the icon disappears when it's moved inside the folder.

If you simply right click on an open web page, and select create shortcut, it doesn't keep the icon inside a folder. BUT, if you open IE7, go to the webpage you want, File > Send > Shortcut to Desktop, it creates a different type of properties window, and the icon does not disappear when the shortcut is moved into a folder from the desktop. Very exciting!

So, I tried to do the same thing with Firefox, and you have to load an add-on called DeskCut extension to add this option to the right-click context menu. The add-on was downloaded from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/66 .

After doing so, I assumed it would work the same way as IE7, but not so. I creates exactly the same properties dialog box that you get from just dragging the Firefox webpage icon to the desktop. And, the icon disappears inside the folder.

So, does anyone know of a way to keep the icon when inside the folder?

By the way, in IE7, I had to manually assign an icon to make it work. The Favicons didn't stick inside the folder. But this doesn't work with Firefox.

I know this sounds minor, but when you have a bunch of shortcuts with the same generic icon, it takes much longer to fine the one you want.

    Sorry for the long post.

    Thanks in advance...

You could use the Bookmarks tool bar to organize these shortcuts. Make a folder in the Bookmarks tool bar by right clicking and selecting "New Folder" name the folder what ever you want and click the "Add" button. Then open the sites and pull the small icon located to the left of the URL in the address bar into the folder. The bookmarks will keep the icon supplied bu the sight publisher. This will clean up your desktop a bit and give you easy access to the sites. By right clicking on the bookmark and selecting properties you will be able to rename the bookmark to whatever you wish.
