The attached drawing shows what I want to do to install drains and venting for a bathroom addition I am doing in New Jersey. My main problem is the vent for the shower. Is this legal and will it work? The addition is approximately 5.5 x 10 and the house main stack is about 12 feet from the toilet. Please se the drawing. Thanks in advance for your help. Rick

Sorry, but this design won't fly. You cannot have sanitary tee fittings on the horizontal drainage as you have for everything. Sanitary tee fittings can be used to pick up vents on the horizontal but they cannot be used to branch off from the main drain to pick up the drains themselves... that make sense?

You need to use a long sweep 90 degree elbow (or 2-45s cemented together) on the horizontal to horizontal change of direction you make for the sink.

Finally, the vents must connect into the main vent at a minimum of 42" off the finish floor...shower and sink vents. Then the 2" vent can go vertical and connect into any vent 2" or larger upstairs.

Tell you what...

I'd be glad to draw up a diagram for you and may even be able to save you some work, i.e. time and money... ;) , but I need to know if WET VENTING is allowed in your area. If you don't know just call your local plumbing inspector and ask him... O.K.? Once I know the answer to that question I'll draw up an acceptable diagram quickly!

Marks bangon about using sanitary tees on the horizontal to pick up a bdrain, however, if they are used on the horizontal to vent a fixture they must be rolled up on a 45 degree angle.

Rick, here's a drawing showing you how to wet vent the toilet and the shower using the lavatory vent as a WET VENT. Here, the lavatory drain and vent are increased to 2" which allows the toilet and the shower to use the lavatory drain/vent as the vent for the whole bathroom. The 3"x2" wye fitting must connect within 7-8 feet of the toilet elbow.

I have also noted where long sweeps and wye fittings are required... see drawing. This should save you some time and MONEY! Can you say *kha-ching*...:)
