    Dog scratching himself
    My girlfriend's dog is scratching himself causing himself to bleed. He has no fleas we've checked and checked and checked plus he has flea medicine.

    First he scratched his ears so much that he would blead. We put a cone on him and his ears healed in about 2 weeks. We take the cone off him after it healed and he now scratches his mouth and now that bleeds. Did the cone thing again until it healed and he is now scratching his head which just had a huge cut today.

    What is the reasoning for him scratching so much?
    Is there any ways we can fix it without him having to wear a cone 24/7?

    He may have an allergy. The only way you will find out what the allergy is or what is making him scratch is by taking him to the vet.

    Animals can get ezcema too. But like wondergirl said, you will need to take him to the vet. Good luck

    My boy was having problems with itching and the cause was beef of all things...
    Never thought beef could cause so much trouble.

    As WG said, allergies are the best bet, whether it be something around the house or dietary.
    It would also pay to get the vet to check him for mites.

    Rice made my puppys hair fall out (a puppy from when I was 13) :( poor baby. We had to give her to another family because we couldn't afford her special food :(

    My moms cat can't eat FISH based food! Because he gets huge patches of scaley skin. Weirdness. Lol.

    Snippy, the possible causes for itching are so numerous we can guess for years. The Vet can give you a definite answer. GO!

    Where did you get the cone? Has this happened before? Why wait? Why not the vet first? Why here?

    About six years ago I had an allergic reaction to a drug my doctor had prescribed for me. I cannot begin to tell you how awful that felt. Every square millimeter of my skin itched. I wanted to rip it off. Scratching made it ten times worse. I watched Animal Planet, trying to get my mind off my misery. To this day, watching AP makes me itch.

    I can only imagine how miserable your dog is! Tell us you have taken him to the vet already!

    Snippy, I have had this problem (although not as severe) for the last couple years, maybe you checked and found all the answers that I was given.

    They were very good and I am now doing something Shaz told me about, it seems to be helping, but they are still scratching a little.

    Since you haven't come back to say anything I don't want to post it all down. If you are interested, check the sights or come back.

    You really need to check with your vet first, and then experiment, like I have done.:)

    It's eczema.. you got the c and z backwards. Check any medical book. :)

    We took it to the vet like last month, and the vet was no help. This was the vets response "I'm not sure what the problem could be, try using a cone"

    Maybe we got a crappy vet, I'll try another one shortly if I can't get any good tips.

    Definitely a crappy vet.
    A vet would usually at least suggest things for you to try, not just say "stick a cone on it" that's not going to fix the problem at all, just leave the dog absolutely miserable because it's itchy and can't scratch

    I don't know if it's called the same thing in America but we have Calamine Lotion...
    If the dog has the cone on then I would suggest applying some of this until you can get another appointment, it will ease the itching for him.
    My boy had a nasty hot spot that he was constantly scratching to the point of bleeding, I put on some Calamine and he barely touched it.

    Of coarse that is not a FIX, just some temporary relief until you can find out what the problem is.

    Thanks we'll try the lotion for him for the meantime, and yes it's called the same thing here ;)
