This movie was made in the 30's or 40's. It's about people on a ship who lead different lives and don't know where their going. They are all dead but don't know it. At the end of the movie, they each go to the afterlife that they deserve.

It sounds like the film you are referring to is the B&W film 'Between Two Worlds' Starring John Garfield, Sydney Greenstreet and Eleanor Parker? It was released in 1944 (even before I was born, but not long before).

You are correct, the plot is about several souls on board a ship being taken to either heaven or hell. In the beginning they do not realize they are dead and this only becomes apparent to them as their individual stories unfold.

They were all killed during an air raid on London and their souls appear on the ship.
