I spray painted my oxidized/faded hood of my 24 yr old car (85 olds delta 88) last week & it looks terrible. Its all blotchy & looks like I used a can of spray paint. I have tried to remove the spray paint with paint thinner, acetone, wd40, carb cleaner & gas. None of them worked. Will laquer thinner remove the spray paint ? I want the hood to look like it did before I sprayed it. The hood looked better before I sprayed it.I used 2 12 oz.cans of rust-oleum painters choice spray paint. Any help would be appreciated.

If pain remover doesn't work, sanding should, fill any dings, primer, paint, sand, paint, repeat.
Buff and polish. May need a clear coat.

Get paint stripper.

I don't want to remove the orig paint under the spray paint. I don't want to repaint the hood.

Rubbing compound?

I just talked to my cousin who's been a auto body mechanic for over 30 yrs. He told me to wet sand hood with 400 grit sandpaper & just take my time. He says rust-olium is the toughest spray paint to remove. He said the paint will clot up on the sand paper & to just scrape it off with a plastic scrapper. He said to not use laquer thinner. Ill work on car this weds. Wish me luck (ill need it). What a stupid mistake I made.

Be easy on the edges.

I have gone through 5 sheets of 400 grit (fine) sandpaper so far. Its very tough to remove the spray paint. I have sanded down to the prime & bare metal on a few spots. Its getting there but not as easy as I would like. Would a different grade of sandpaper work better & speed up the process ? The hood still looks terrible.
