    Toe nail removal and aftercare
A friend of mine had his big toenail removed due to it being ingrown. After removal it was treated with phenol so the toenail is not allowed to grow back in. That was two months ago and all aftercare has failed miserably and the toe is still swollen and red, at times . Don't get me wrong, the operation was done by a professional.

Aftercare was soaking in water once a day, salt added. No dressing. Antibiotics (3 sets actually and the last one stronger and only worked moderately). He is a heavy drinker so think that may be something to do with the slow healing process.

I have exhausted my knowledge on treating this problem, therefore coming here for guidance, forum co-members. What say you in the way of advice. I am hoping J-9 will have something to say regarding getting this cleared up.

Thanks to all in advance !

I had the same procedure three years ago, but they wanted mine to grow back. He needs to go get a second opinion from another doctor. Drinking probably doesn't help, no.

Thanks, chi. He already has had three opinions ! All doctors, two nurses, and me. Nothing has helped, believe me, I am stumped and I am really great at first aid and wounds. I agree the drinking is a definite downside to the situation, but its lost on him.

Hmmm... I'm at a loss as well. I really wish that I could help more. I know J_9 is online right now... Perhaps she will plop in.
