Craftsman lawn tractor with Briggs & Stratton 18.5 HP OHV, Inteck engine
Engine worked fine last week and for 3 minutes after start this week. Then the engine sound changed. Itd made sounds like metal balls banging around inside. Now it will not start / turn-over. Just the sound of metal balls banging around inside the top of the engine. Any ideas on what the problem is?

    Hi,
Sounds like a rod brole; lack of lubrication?
    Peace,

Thanks Clarke. Now I know what to discuss with a mechanic.

    Hi,
The easy way to verify this is to remove the plug and stick a finge or thumb over the hole. Have someone hit the starter; broken rod then no compression so it will not attempt to blow your finger/thumb out of hole.
Best route of repair is short block or aftermarket engine. On is cheaper partswise and more labor; the other, engine costs more but the time is cut to 1/3 to 40% for labor.
    Peace,
    Clarke

I had a mechanic look at the engine & my spark plug was loose, making the engine run hotter & burning off my oil. Metal scraps in the oil, so I am replacing the engine.
    Thanks for your insights.
