I'm going on a first date next week with a guy who is a friend of my sister's friend, we have exchanged mobile numbers and have text each other a few times, I am still nervous about the first date as we have not met in person and we have decided to go out for dinner to see how things go, so I am looking for advice and tips on what topics I should avoid and what topics would be a good conversation starters as well as what not to do on a first date and what to do, :rolleyes::confused:

The web is full of blind date advice if you Google "blind date advice". From personal experience, I offer these tips:

• Unless you're conversationally gifted, avoid the one-on-one nonstop "The Date" dinner. Have dinner with a show or some sort of interrupted entertainment or do a group date.
• Plan for the date to be an hour tops. If things are going well, the date can always be extended.
• Have your own evening planned, in case his plan falls apart, consisting of short timeframe discrete activities to provide opportunities for "the end" of the date if you run out of things to talk about or the other person is a psycho. Additional hours of "this ain't working" if the date starts to go awry can permanently kill any second date chance. Best to have a mostly good date with that one weird or awkward moment toward the end, than a mostly bad date with a good beginning.
• Deep breaths, slow exhales. Relax.
• Do not keep eyeing the hot bartender.
• Do not complain about work, your lousy friends, or your past relationships.
• Do not get drunk and then wander off if he leaves to use the restroom, etc.
• Be hungry enough to eat something substantial.
• Do not overdress.
• Do not dunk yourself in perfume beforehand.
• Leave your cellphone in the car.
• Show up/be ready on time.
• Do not alter your date's planned evening to run your own errands.
• If you can't accept his choice of restaurant (food allergy, you had an "incident" there, whatever), have your alternative restaurant already chosen.
• Unless you're planning to quickly knock boots that evening, do not wear that skintight dress - it makes it hard for your date to think.
• Have an opinion, even if you need to say "Hmm, I need to think about that first". Couple word, "yes" or "no" responses to everything your date says makes him wish he was back at work doing something productive with his time and making money.

Just be yourself and try to enjoy your time together.

Don't need to force anything. The more natural you are, the more comfortable you will be.

Remember to try to have some fun!

The best thing to do on a blind date is to be interested in the other person. Make eye contact and ask them questions about themselves (however, avoid the third degree!).

Don't blurt out your whole life story.

Make it lunch or coffee so you don't have to hang around unless you want to.

Wear something you like and feel comfortable in.

Treat it the same way you would meeting a new friend rather than a potential mate or life partner!
