I was recently approached by my supervisor at work. He told me he had a gift for me and proceeded to hand me a Mormon Bible. I was shocked and offended because I am not a Mormon. Once I left his presence I noticed hee wrote an inscription in it. It explains about how he knows I want to do the right thing and calls me dear heart and tells me I have a dear heart. He then goes on to say in there that he encourages me to read the Mormon Bible and except the Holy Ghost and live by his commandments etc.

I do not feel it is appropriate for him to give me a Bible in the workplace or push his religion on me.

Do I have a lawsuit against my employer?

Okay, but I don't see why you want to sue him for offering you a bible. You could have just told him you were not interested in the Mormon teachings and left it at that. And... handed him back the bible with a smile and thank you.

No, you don't have a law suit, you may have a claim that you can file though the EEOC and they may get your company to make a policy on this. But if he merely gave you a gift, and did not try to convert you, actually I don't believe this is even against a EEOC policy.

Also to claify a few things, there is no Mormon bible, the "Mormons" they are really called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Mormon is a slang term. There is also another smaller group that use a similar name but are "reorganised"
They use the same bible as any other Christian church may use.

You can check with your HR department about policy on handouts and the such, do they allow avon people to hand out avon books, do they allow people to see school project items on lunch.

Why sue your employer? Does your company allow the Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts literature begging you to buy their cookies or popcorn in your workplace? Most companies do allow this. Handing you a Book of Mormon was not really out of place. It may have been in poor taste for that guy to gift it to you, but I am sure he meant well. He was probably a new convert and was still excited about this new religious experience and just wanted to share it with you.

You could have politely refused his gift by graciously saying No thank you, but that was a nice gesture on your part to have offered it to me.

You need to learn how to graciously refuse gifts you don't want. Would you have refused a box of chocolates? Probably not.

Lawsuit... nah. Mormon's are typically harmless and will, as with other religions, try to bolster their numbers. There are a lot of organized religions that recruit. In some religions, you are required to do so. You must remember, organized religion is, at the end of the day, a business. The more parishoners a church has, the greater its support.

Someone handing you literature about their religion is nothing more than getting a flyer in the mail from a landscaping business. While to some, this could be considered a nuisance, it must be taken with a grain of salt. They are only trying to spread the happiness.

If, after you explain to your supervisor that you are not interested, they continue to approach you with literature, religious innuendos, or begins to harass you because you turned him down... then you should look into the harassment policy your job has.
