What to do after you found out after the home was purchased has asbestos siding?
My husband and I bought our first home due to having problem tenants when we were renting. Well after we purchased the home. About over a year later. We tried to put in some new windows in the house because of the windows not being up-to-date and better quality. Since the home was built back in 1948. Well the contractor that was going to install the windows came out and found that our siding is asbestos siding. That he didn't want to touch our home because of this. We were never inform by the sellers, broker or inspector of the home having asbestos siding. Now we got a rough estimate that would cost $10,000 to replace/remove the siding and put new better quality as well safer siding on the house. I don't know if I want to pursue because the couple was an old old couple. Their son that was helping in remodeling wasn't so so nice. He didn't want to put in a exhaust fan in the only bathroom in the home, he didn't want to put the handles on the closet doors on right, he didn't want to redo the back door because it was hard to open and close it. I just feel that if we don't go after them for the asbestos siding we are going to have shell out $10,000 more dollars into the house that we don't have. Any ideas on what you would do in this situation. I have spoken to the broker about the asbestos siding and she said it isn't a big deal unless you break it or demolition the house. Which we won't do since we are stuck in the house for 30yrs. So demolition is totally out of the question.

Its easy for your broker to say its not a big deal... he isn't the one at serious risk of lung cancer (mesothelioma). True - if the fibers remain intact the risk is minimal, but if its in your siding, are you positive it isn't somewhere else too?

What do you do? You hire an asbestos abatement specialist to come in and remove it. How? Borrow the money, save the money, whatever you have to do. Its your LIFE we are talking about.

As for what to do about the sale... unless you can PROVE that they knew, there isn't likely much you can do.

The OP stated there was an inspector; if they inspected the property prior to the sale, they should have caught that. There just might be a case here. They're going to have to go through their paperwork and make sure they didn't sign a waiver without realizing it.
