You can try this:
1. Home Depot / Lowe's may have a shower head with flow control. If so, you may be able to use that to regulate water flow.
2. I have seen flat round rubber washers with lots of little holes sold at one of these places. They come in different sizes. Unscrew the shower head and take it with you to Home Depot / Lowe's and see if they can find you a rubber washer with tiny holes that will fit in. That may slow down the water coming out of the head.
If you want to decrease the shower head flow, I agree with SW1 get a shower head restrictor install it in your shower head it will fix your problem, good luck.

Sorry, sw1 and afaroo, I was unclear about my description. While using the showerhead, nearly as much water is flowing from the tub faucet below (as if I want to fill for a bath) and it wastes water and takes longer to clear the tub for rinsing. The showerhead is a fairly new WaterPik w/hand-held hose use. Could this possibly be an issue w/the control nob that switches the waterflow source from UP to DOWN arrows indicated? I can spell "plumbing", if y'all haven't already guessed.
Your diverter valve needs repair or replacement. Where is the diverter, on the tub spout or on the wall along with the valve?

There are 3 knobs in the tub (center one has arrow indicating UP or DOWN for water outpour). This is an old house and a tub/shower wall covering (3-piece) was done over 10 years ago when Mom first bought this house, so I'm unfamiliar with what's there.Quote:

Washer in the diverter, the center needs to be replaced. Remove the UP/Down thing with a sharp pointed tool (steak knife) Remove the screw that holds the handle on. Remove the chrome cover around the stem. Some slid on some screw on. Remove the escutcheon (round disk like thing on the wall).
The first nut you see will be the bonnet nut. That's what you tighten to keep water from coming out around the stem. The second nut will be the shoulder of the stem. Put a wrench on that and remove the stem. Take the stem to a hardware store and get all the parts you need to rebuild stem.

One more piece of advice. At the same time you have the stem and washer assemblies out check the seats for nicks or rough spots. If you find any they must be replaced. Nicked or rough seats can tear up a new washer in a very short time. Good luck, Tom
