    Wa alaikum salaam,

One reason is that it is mentioned in the Quran.
    Quran chapter 33 (Surah Al-Ahzab verse 6)
The Prophet is closer to the believers than their ownselves[], and his wives are their (believers') mothers (as regards respect and marriage). And blood relations among each other have closer personal ties in the Decree of Allâh (regarding inheritance) than (the brotherhood of) the believers and the Muhajirûn (emigrants from Makkah, etc.), except that you do kindness to those brothers (when the Prophet SAW joined them in brotherhood ties). This has been written in the (Allâh's Book of Divine) Decrees (AlLauh AlMahfûz)."

    (Surah Al-Ahzab verse 53)
"O you who believe! Enter not the Prophet's houses, except when leave is given to you for a meal, (and then) not (so early as) to wait for its preparation. But when you are invited, enter, and when you have taken your meal, disperse, without sitting for a talk. Verily, such (behaviour) annoys the Prophet, and he is shy of (asking) you (to go), but Allâh is not shy of (telling you) the truth. And when you ask (his wives) for anything you want, ask them from behind a screen, that is purer for your hearts and for their hearts. And it is not (right) for you that you should annoy Allâh's Messenger, nor that you should ever marry his wives after him (his death). Verily! With Allâh that shall be an enormity. "

They are also the best role models of muslim women.

Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) was never called as the father of Islam or muslim at any time in the Quran or Hadith. As you mentioned the Prophet (pbuh) always referred to himself as a servant of Allah.
