    Landlord/tenants in NJ
We lived in an apt for over 10 yrs, the first few years we had a lease, after the landlords passed away, their daughter took over, but we did not have a lease. The property is being sold, and the new owners were a little too demanding. As a result we moved out, and was told to get our stuff out of the apt. The other day I went to pick up the remainder of the items, only to find that they changed the locks. What are my options?

Need more info before we can give you a legally accurate answer:

When did you inform the landlord that you would be vacating?
When did you actually vacate the premises?
When did you realize that the locks had been changed?

Landlord was notified in May 09 of the possibility of moving because of the living conditions, we wanted the apt upstairs which is bigger. We moved out on July 15th and the locks were changed around the 17th when I went to retrieve the rest of the belongings in the apt.

When was your rent paid up to? If you paid July rent you have access for the whole month but if rent ended at the end of June they can change the locks.

The problem I have is that you say you notified your landlord of the "possibility" of moving. It sounds like you never actually gave a notice; I'm not sure on your state, but most have a 30-day notice law. How did your landlord find out that you vacated?
