Help!!
I downloaded Explorer 8 and my internet connection died!

I have rolled back to xplorer 7 but no change to my probems.

Computer is 1 year old - never had a problem until now.
OS: Vista business - serv pack 1
I was connected via ethernet cble on an ethernet adapter ( intel 82566DC-2 gig ) this was in the computer when I bought it.

My modem and the cable works perfect on another computer.

Ethernet card works perfetly running tests.

No ethernet light comes on until I DISABLE local network connection. Then the light comes on, but I cannot still connect.

My ISP says everything is OK.

Microsoft cannot offer any help either - tried everything for more than 1 hour on the phone with them.

I am so sure it is a setting that has been set wrong in all the trying out - I get the following errors:

No DHCP server set

No link

Autoconfig sets u a WRONG IP add : 169 254 44 41


Stupid questions: o I need a DHCP server?

What is it? How do I get one? Why was this never a problem before exp 8?

It I a standalone PC - no other connections. No wireless.

Normal ADSL connetion to Bigpond

Try going to your command line, which will be in the accessory section of the start menu, and type without quotes "ipconfig /renew" and press enter. This should establish an ip address for your computer. Make sure it is plugged into the modem when you do this.

The 169.254 address happens when there isn't a DHCP server.

No Link happens when there is no connection.

Lets briefly look at the cable test. There is a way for the cable to work on one computer and not the other and still be the ethernet cable. If your computer or por t is something like an auto midx ethernet port, it won't care if it's a crossover cable or not.

I suspect your using a crossover cable on the errant PC and it's not set up to use it.

Examine the plugs through the clear housing and make sure the wire colors are the same going to pins 1,2,3 and 6. You just need to check one of these wires. You may have to pull back the strain relief.

Sorry it refuses to do the Ipconfig /renew

Why do I suddenly NOT have a DHCPP server ? Since this worked perfectly before, what happened to the one there? Can I install a new one?

The cable is NOT crossover - in fact I have 3 cables , they are all straight and they all work on the othe computer with this modem and the same ISP.

Hmm, I'm not that familiar with your ISP. Before it failed, did you have to click an icon to connect, or was it always just on? Like if you ran explorer, did it just work? If that is the case, then the ISP should be your dhcp server. If not, and you had to "connect" your ISP is probably PPPoE connection. Do you remember if you had to "connect"?

EDIT: Sometimes even if you had to connect, some people just leave it connected, which would appear as being always on. So do you remember needing a user id and password to get online at any time? Same would go for all your other computers.

Also, are you using a router to connect more than one computer at the same time?

I looked at Bigpond, and it looks like it provides both ADSL and Cable. Is your connection from a coax cable, or from the telephone line to your modem?

I really appreciate the help.
No I am not using a PPPoE - As soon as I turn on thr modem, I am on. The connection is ADSL.
If Telstra are my DHCP server it still won't see that as the light on the modem for the Ethernet connection is off.
No other computers are connected - just the standalone PC.
The most frustrating thing is that it all worked perfect for a year and all I did was to download EXP 8.
Why does the ethernetlight come on if I disable "Local network connection"?

Try your fire wall, it may have re set when you downloaded the new explorer.
Your computer may need to refresh it's IP as well.
Here is how to get a new IP,
Un Plug your modem, (Power off) Unplug your eithernet cable from your computer and power off if you have a hub un plug it as well.
Plug in your modem... wait till it gets a lock and the activity light is working, plug your eithernet cable either into your router or computer and power up.
This acts as a re-new for your ip and should get you up and running.

Sorry - Still no result
I still cannot make the ethernet light come on ( on 2 different modems) UNLESS I turn of Local area network - and then I only have the light on, I still cannot go online. That part is really bugging me.

Local area network is my ethernet card, right? Which means I do need that to connect.

I have even uninsalled the card and re-installed it.

Can you post the entire ipconfig /all result ?

I know what. Check your internet connection properties. Make sure that there are not two "Internet protocol TCP/IP" things installed. Seen it once with someone who had AOL. No one could fix it. Took me 5 minutes and at that point I knew little about Microsoft's PC's except how to set up the network.

The pdf came across really nice and it was a nice way of doing it. You can also delete the attachment at any time via your profile panel.

I don't see anything unusual there except that it looks like maybe? You have a packet sniffer installed. Just a guess.

Do look closely at the control panel for the network card. Make sure that there isn't two instances of a protocol, particularly TCP/IP.

Also look at the Device Manager: General tab (This device is operating properly) and the Resources tab (No conflicts).

I have checked all that - sorry no difference.

I think there is something going on with the isatap adapter.

On the Friday Sept 8 post by PeterLago take a look at it:

ISATAP Adapter Problem

On a Windows Vista-based computer or on a Windows Server 2008-based computer, the Microsoft ISATAP adapter appears with a yellow exclamation mark next to it in Device Manager, and you also receive an error message

So, this appears to be Vista stuff

But that is another weird thing, I do NOT have a yellow sign in Device manager, it says: this device is working perfectly!
I cannot even install the modem from the ISP's original DVD, as it needs to talk to the modem to make that happen!
Ehernet connection between the 2 is the problem!! As it is VISTA I cannot use a USB connection.

Try rolling back the isatap and the ethernet card drivers one at a time.

The isatap and the one beginning with a "T" shown in IPCONFIG /all is Microsoft's way of transitioning from IPV4 to IPV6.

I cannor roll back the isatap driver - I did the other one, and now I have a Yellow exclamation mark!
