My well stopped working. The pump circuit breaker is on. The system has a Square D pumptrol pressure switch. How do I determine if the pressure switch is bad (no signal to the submirsible pump) or if the pump (145 feet down in the well) has gone bad.

How big is your tank? What's the cut in and cut out pressures? What's the pressure when the tank is completely empty of water.

The first thing you must do is check the breaker box to see if you have power to the control box. Let me know what you find. Tom

Stu, remove the grey cover over the switch. Look at the points inside the switch. Are they closed (in contact) or open? If they are closed, and they probably are, then use an emory board to file them. With the power off, pry open each pair, put the emory board between the points, let them close, and give them a few strokes with the emory board. Do this for each set. Then restore power and see if the pump comes on. This does not always work as the contact points don't normally get so corroded as to not allow 220 volts to pass, but it's worth a try.

Is your pump in the well or above ground?
